Donate, Donate, Donate!!

A third grade teacher has been diagnosed with cancer and White Oak schools are trying to help out in anyway possible! We have a fundraiser for this week that asks you to donate any spare change or donations. Students are to bring the money to their homeroom teacher and Friday the amount will be counted.

While helping a family in need, we are also having a week of themes.

Monday- Crazy Socks Day

Tuesday-Hat Day

Wednesday-Crazy Hair Day

Thursday-Rock Out Cancer Day- Students may wear rock star themed clothing WITHIN the dress code.

Friday-School Spirit Day- Face paint is allowed 🙂

These themes are not mandatory but it is a way to show support and have a little fun!

Here are our CRAZY SOCK KIDDOS!!

This Week!

Parents,

This week we 1st grade teachers will be testing for TPRI and will be having substitute teachers in and out of the room.

For this reason I have decided to postpone the spelling test to Friday. The kids are expecting to have it tomorrow and that’s okay because I want them to know those words 🙂

Please continue to support you child at home with encouraging words and help!

The reading logs are working out very well but there are still some students that aren’t turning them in with signatures and documentation on them.  Reading at home is extremely important and good practice for our 1st graders! Please help them to become better readers 🙂

Also this week, Tuesday, is Constitution Day and 1st grade will be learning about the Constitution and creating a class book.

This week in math we are continuing to problem solve with addition using the best strategy per individual child. Ask them about

the number line

the hundreds chart

the tens frame

and counters

See which one the like best and encourage them to use the best one!

We are also striving to be CHAMPS and working to have our noise levels down while working during work time.

We are also creating a class story with the help and imagination of your students! Ask them about the beach story we created in class! They really seem to enjoy this part of the day!

We are also still focusing on vowels, rhyming words, and sight word locating. They are doing an awesome job and we are covering ground!

Thank you for all that you do!

If you have any questions feel free to let me know.

This week in 1st Grade!

We will continue to keep moving through 1st grade as we start our third week of school.

I want to let you know a little bit of what will be going on in class this coming week.

In math we will continue to learn about different problem solving strategies a to use along with different resources that can be used such as the hundred chart, tens frame, number line, etc. All students will be problem solving with the best method for them.

In reading and phonics we are concentrating on vowels a,e,i,o, and u. We will discuss and learn about short vowels and long vowels along with locating them. We also have some “no excuse words” that we go over every day. We learn how to spell, read, and write each word.

the, and, a, of, to are the five we learned last week.

These words are displayed on our class word wall and are always available for them to look to for guidance and spelling. We are also working hard in Literacy Stations which gives students review and practice with poetry, word work, word families, writing , and computers.

We have started writer’s workshop and it is off to a great start! Currently we are writing a class book through interactive writing. The students work to come up with sentences. I write the sentence with their help and then they rewrite the sentence on their dry erase boards. Writer’s Workshop offers them a chance to write about anything they want. We conference about their writing and then as the year progresses we will work through the writing process to eventually reach the publishing stage.

We are off to a great start and the kids and I are working hard to make this year a successful one! Thank you for your continuing support 🙂

If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Parents!

There is a Parent Orientation on the Primary campus Monday, September 9,2013.

The meeting will be from 5:30-6:30.

Please join us to talk and learn about campus wide expectations and rules along with classroom goals, rules, expectations and discipline management plans. I will also be including information about your student’s reading logs, reading expectations, and math expectations.

This will be a fabulous opportunity to see how your child and I spend our days.

Thank you!

I hope to see you there,

Keepin’ It Real in 1st Grade!

We are off to a great start this year and I am SO excited to know you and your children!!

This first week of school has been spent getting to know each other and learning about the classroom and our classroom procedures.

We have talked about our expectations as a class, and important rules we should follow. We have signed our social contract and discussed that everyone in our class is a part of our team and family! We will continue to work to make our classroom a safe and resourceful environment for all the learning and growing we will do throughout the year.

I am so excited and blessed to be at White Oak Primary school and can’t wait to get the 1st grade show on the road!!

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to communicate and contact me  through the planner, email, or call me on the school phone.

Thank you!

Miss James 🙂
