This week

We are continuing our study on penguins. We have been using this in all subjects but especially in research and writing. The students seem to really be enjoying it! This will be our final week of penguins.

Guided reading is continuing and student should be bringing home a book every night. After they read the book they bring home, they may read anything else they would like. Please continue to sign the reading log every night 🙂

Spelling: some, so, these, would, other, into, has, more, her, two. Spelling test NEXT Tuesday

Math: MONEY MONEY MONEY!! Your kids learned about nickels today. Please ask them about the nickel. If you have any change let them count it to  you.

Wednesday is the 100th day of school and we will be celebrating with FUN stations all centered around the number 100!

Again, if anyone would like to be room mother for our valentine’s day party, let me know.

You may begin sending supplies to decorate bags anytime! Glitter, doilies, stickers, etc.

Thank you!! Have a great week!

Reminders**

Please remember that Wednesday is an early release day for teacher training.  We will be dismissing at 11:30 for Primary. PLEASE make arrangements for your kids and if you make any changes please put them in the PLANNER for easy access.

We ask that parents do not have lunch with their kiddos on that day.  Also, on early release days I know most of you eat after you pick your kiddos up but…if you don’t send some small something with them we have to send them through the line for a lunch.

Valentines is coming up and I/we need help with a few items for our kids.  If anyone could help me with white paper bags with handles on them that would be great!  If you can, please text me or email me.  I also need things to decorate the bags like stickers, heart doilies, etc… anything the kids can use to decorate their bags would help tremendously!!!  Also, keep in mind we will be doing a valentine exchange for every student in the class 🙂

Spelling words for the next two weeks:  some, so, these, would, other, into, has, more, her, two

Phonics:  We are working on verbs this week and showing them how to tie in nouns, adjectives, and verbs in their writing.

Math:  hour and half hour on clocks. We also will start coins with identifications and values. We continue to work on addition, subtraction, and problem solving

Writing:  We are focusing on re-reading to revise and edit.  This simply means they are going back over their story when they are done and re-reading it to check for left out words, making sure sentences make sense, looking for punctuation and capitals after punctuation, and making sure they have spelled no-excuse words correctly (I am giving spelling grades on their writing).

Science/Social Studies:  We are continuing our study on Penguins.  Next week is the 100th day of school and Groundhog day so it’ll be busy but FUN!

If anyone would like to volunteer to be room mother for our class party, I would appreciate it! This is one easier to plan! Please let me know if you’re willing!

Upcoming dates to remember:

January 25- Early Student Release at 11:30

February 1-100th Day of School

February 14- Valentine Class Party at 11:30

February 20- President’s Day and School Holiday

Thanks for all that you do!

Graded Papers and Spelling Test

There are several graded papers coming home today. Please take time to look over the papers and talk with your child about their grades.

Tomorrow we are having a spelling test. A spelling preview will be coming home to study and look over so you know which words are giving your kids trouble. The current words and all the previous ones will be tested…that is why it is important to learn how to read, write and spell them and practice them in their writing.

In math we are working hard on time to the hour!

We are beginning a penguin study… this is my personal favorite!!

Book Order

I am sending a book order home today. Remember, this is a great way to get your kids reading something that interests them to SPARK or further their love for reading. Ordering from scholastic also gives me an opportunity to expand our classroom library with books and games FOR FREE with bonus points!

Please send CHECK only or you may order online. Our Class Code is: NGZ2M

The order is due January 20th

Thanks for all that you do!!

January 9-13

Please be aware of the temperature in the mornings, last week there were several kids that would come to school with no coat on and/or in shorts and short sleeves. Please make sure that your child comes to school with a coat on. We don’t go outside if it “feels like” 35 degrees or below, but when we can go out, we are going! Please just be aware of the weather forecast.

This week in…

Reading: It’s time for the mid-year TPRI (Texas Primary Reading Inventory), so students will be tested to see their improvement in these reading/writing/comprehension skills.

Word Work: We will continue analyzing and sorting nouns and now adding adjectives to describe them. This will be assessed in their writing.

Spelling: will, each, about, how, up, out, them, then, she, many

The spelling test will be next Tuesday over these 10 words along with words from the past. The spelling grade on the report card is a grade from spelling test and also for using spelling words in their independent writing.

Math: Measurement will continue, as well as, problem solving with addition and subtraction. We are also introducing money and time in our number corner.

Please be aware of some upcoming events:

January 16- School Holiday

January 25-Early Release/Faculty Inservice (Please be sure there are arrangements made for going home early.)

Thank you

Happy Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2017!! It’s going to be a fabulous year!!

I am so excited to see all my precious kiddos tomorrow! They are all so amazing and THANK YOU all for being so amazing as well! You’re the first teacher and together WE GOT THIS!

We are going to keep pushing and expectations will be higher as the students push through to the end of the year.  Report cards will go home this Thursday.

Reading: Students will continue to being books hope to read every night.  Remember, if they are reading something that you think is too easy, it’s to improve fluency. Some students will begin bringing home chapter books. I do not expect the book to be read in one night. Simply record the chapter read on their reading log and make sure it is completed by Friday. They can bring home self choice picture books also if they want.

Word Work: We will begin analyzing nouns and classifying them. This will lead into describing these nouns with adjectives. This will not only be our focus in our word work but also in our writing.

Math: We will begin our unit on measurement and how important it is to understand how to measure with non-standard units. We will also be introducing time to the hour and half/hour along with identification and values of coins.

Science will be Winter and weather changes.

Champs Assemblies begin this week. They are held every Friday morning at 8:00 with one particular class hosting and presenting the week’s character trait. We will be presenting much later in the year. I will send more information home about this closer to the date.

Happy New Year!
